Dom Perignon 1999

domp-doneDom Perignon is probably the most famous Champagne in the world. It’s regarded by many as the height of luxury and indulgence, although there are plenty of other good Champagnes out there.

The monk ‘Dom’ Piere Perignon is said to have discovered the technique of secondary fermentation in bottle, now known as ‘methode champenoise’ or ‘methode traditionelle’ although there are reports that someone else discovered it and he simply recreated it and took the credit. Either way, Dom Perignon has the reputation for the discovery and has been regarded as a leader in Champagne ever since.

The brand is now owned by Moet Hennesy and is famous throughout the world. Even James Bond drinks it! The question that mere mortals ask is ‘is it worth the hefty price tag? Is it really that much better than a Champagne costing under £30?’ Well, if you’re comparing it to the mediocre mass produced brands such as Moet & Chandon (also owned by Moet Hennesy) then yes it really is far superior and worth the extra. However, if you want a good Champagne at a realistic price, there are good Champagnes from family producers which come close in quality to Dom P but are available for a third of the price! But let’s be honest, we don’t drink Champagne looking for value for money. It’s all about indulgence and celebration, a feel good factor, so we want the exclusive Champagne that we deserve. Here Dom P will continue to win hands down.
