Strandveld Adamastor 2008
Strandveld is a relatively new winery set up in 2001 by a group of wineloving friends who decided to make their own wine. They bravely chose an old farm in the Elim region just 9 kms from Cape Agulhas, where they set up South Africa’s most southerly winery! Their calculated gamble worked and they are producing some fantastic wines, and rightly winning some top awards too.
What’s it like?
Strandveld Adamastor 2008 is their top white wine, a blend of 56% Sauvignon Blanc and 44% Semillon. The Sauv Blanc was fermented in stainless steel for freshness, the Semillon in oak to add body and complexity. It’s a full, rich wine with good body and an array of different flavours with a clean, mineral finish. They only made 5700 bottles, and received numerous awards for this vintage including Old Mutual Wine Show (one of the premium awards in SA) Silver Medal, Veritas Awards Silver Medal, and SATerroir Awards Best Regional Blend.
How much? Where from?
Strandveld Adamastor 2008 is quite difficult to find in the UK. It’s only produced in tiny quantities and that is compounded by a rather “hit and miss” UK importer who never seems to have any stock, so getting hold of it is not easy! The best price we could find was www.goodwineonline.co.uk at £12.75
