Ernie Els The Big Easy red wine blend 2009

ernie els big easyThe Ernie Els winery was originally set up by Ernie Els (the golfer!) as he loves good red wine.  He formed a  partnership with Jean Engelbrecht of Vrede en Lust  in 1999 and set up the winery in Stellenbosch (they also jointly own Guardian Peak winery too). They made just three red wines initially with a firm focus on quality. They employed Louis Strydom as their winemaker. A natural expansion was their “Big Easy” restaurant on site, which has subsequently expanded and opened more branches in Dubai and Mauritius with more to come. They have now expanded the wine range to 6 reds, all of which are excellent. Ernie and Jean have now gone their separate ways to develop their own brands further. Ernie now combines the wine experience with golfing holidays and safaris for any of you who fancy it!

What’s it like?

Ernie Els The Big Easy 2009 is a five way blend of the four classic Rhone grapes Shiraz, Mouverdre, Grenache and Viognier with Cabernet Sauvignon, designed to be approachable and easy drinking. They originally designed the wine for their on site restaurant (called the Big Easy!) as a delicious red which could be opened at the table and enjoyed immediately without needing time to breathe and develop. It was so successful that they’ve now released it for general consumption in the retail trade too. Deep ruby in colour, it has strong fruit on the nose with some vanilla. Strong fruit flavours on the palate with some spice from the Shiraz. Big and warming, full bodied and very smooth with integrated oak and a great overall balance. It’s a great wine for everyday drinking. Awarded 4 stars by John Platter.
