Ernie Els Signature Blend 2005

ernie els signature red 2005The Ernie Els winery was originally set up by Ernie Els (the golfer!) as he loves good red wine.  He formed a  partnership with Jean Engelbrecht of Vrede en Lust  in 1999 and set up the winery in Stellenbosch (they also jointly own Guardian Peak winery too). They made just three red wines initially with a firm focus on quality. They employed Louis Strydom as their winemaker. A natural expansion was their “Big Easy” restaurant on site, which has subsequently expanded and opened more branches in Dubai and Mauritius with more to come. They have now expanded the wine range to 6 reds, all of which are excellent. Ernie and Jean have now gone their separate ways to develop their own brands further. Ernie now combines the wine experience with golfing holidays and safaris for any of you who fancy it!

What’s it like?

Ernie Els Signature Blend 2005 is the ultimate wine from this winery. A bordeaux blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot all vinified separately and aged in oak for 20 months prior to blending. The wine was then aged a further 18 months in bottle prior to release. Very, very smooth and silky with strong red fruit flavours and a superb overall balance. John Platter 4.5 stars, Decanter Gold Medal and Wine Spectaor 94 points.

How much? Where from?

Ernie Els Signature Blend 2005 is a rare wine with only a few retailers stocking it. There are a few who feature it on their websites but don’t actually hold any stock! The best deal (as always on South Africans) is with www.goodwineonline.co.uk at £40.80 who do actually have the wine in stock!
