Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Owned by Cape Mentelle from Western Autralia, this is probably the most famous of all New Zealand wines and was instrumental in establishing Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc as a wine style in it’s own right.
What’s it like?
Very good. Intense fruit, well balanced with good length. Originally this was the first top quality wine from this region. Now however there are quite a few other wineries producing wines of equal or even greater quality. Cloudy Bay is able to live on it’s reputation, and by artificially restricting volumes they’re able to command a relatively high price. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a good wine, but there are better Marlborough Sauvignons out there that are better value for money.
How much? Where can I buy it?
Well, technically it’s only available on an allocation basis where the retailers lucky enough to be allocated some are restricted, usually to only half a dozen cases or so. However the canny consumer has got wise and realised he can buy other better wines so this allocation basis is no longer as rigid as it used to be. If you want some Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008 the best deal at present appears to be Nicholls and Perks at £15.50 who have a few cases left.
