Gerardo Cesari is one of Italy’s best producers, based in the Veneto region where he makes some superb wines. He was voted ‘Italian Winemaker of the Year’ for 2004 and again for 2006! This Merlot is a cracking wine and highly recommended.

What’s it like?

This is a fruit driven wine with soft tannins but has more body than you’d expect, making it an excellent wine to accompany food. Good cutting acidity to cleanse the palate too. It really is very good.

Merlot Mitico IGT delle Venezie Cesari 2005 is available from everywine.co.uk for £17.24 per bottle or from www.goodwineonline.co.uk for £10.12 . I know everywine like to charge extra although they don’t even hold any stock – they take your order then try and buy in the wine! But this is ridiculous. Who are you going to buy it from?
