Gerardo Cesari is one of Italy’s best producers, based in the Veneto region where he makes some superb wines. He was voted ‘Italian Winemaker of the Year’ for 2004 and again for 2006! He makes two Ripassas, this Mara, and another called Bosan. They’re both fantastic.

What’s it like?

It’s a great food wine. Plenty of fruit but a little lighter in body and style than Cesari’s Bosan or the Zenato.

How much? Where do I buy it?

It’s fairly widely available from quality independent wine merchants. At time of writing this Talking Wine had it on at £12.99, Cambridge Wine had the 2006 at £13.99 but still the best value for Mara Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC Cesari 2005 is www.goodwineonline.co.uk at £11.50
