R H Phillips Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Cuvee
R.H. Phillips. The Giguiere family founded their own vineyard in the Dunnigan Hills area. Despite being in the poor quality Central Valley, the vineyards specific location is cooled by sea breezes from San Francisco Bay. As a result of this unique mesoclimate they produced excellent grapes, and facing reluctance by winemakers to trust this unproven grape growing region, they founded their own winery. They now produce nearly half a million cases per year.
What’s it like?
Not great, which is a shame as the majority of their other wines are fantastic. It has reasonable fruit on the palate but is a little flabby and lacking acidity, presumably due to the addition of 10% Semillon, which was probably done with the best intentions. Sauvignon Blanc should be floral and crisp, and this one isn’t. Not much length either.
How much? Where can I buy it?
It should be between £6 and £7 and is stocked by goodwineonline and Tanners.
