Pendarves Estate Hunter Valley Verdelho 2004

pendarves-verdelhoThis wine is something quite special and now very rare. I’ll explain why.

The Pendarves estate was owned for many years by Dr Phil Norrie, a maker of first class wines and also an eminent doctor famous for his research into the relationship between wine and health. This Verdelho, and also his wonderful Shiraz, regularly won trophies at the Hunter Valley small wine makers show. Dr Phil used a concentrated, naturally occurring antioxidant called ‘Resveratrol’ in his wines which has some very beneficial health properties and was all set to become the latest buzzword in healthy wine. However, while waiting a year  for EU certification to allow him to use the term ‘resveratrol’ on the label, his vineyards suffered yet another major natural disaster, this time a severe flood. Basically after battling the Eurocrats and even nature herself,  Dr Phil lost interest and sold his vineyards, which is a real shame, but understandable given the circumstances. There will never be any more of this wonderful wine made ever again.

So what’s it like?

Although pale in colour, this wine has bags and bags of fruit. It’s fairly full bodied with relatively low acidity making it ideal to accompany Chinese or Asian food. It’s a great alternative to a Chardonnay to enjoy on a summer’s day. And of course it’s good for you!

How much is it? And where can I get it?
