Mitchell Grenache Sangiovese Mouverdre 2003
Andrew and Jane Mitchell own a fairly small winery based in Clare Valley, where they make some pretty decent wines.
What’s it like? Where can I buy it?
This is a very unusual wine. 16% abv. The grapes are dried in the sun prior to fermenting, the technique used in Veneto in Northern Italy to make Amarone. They also start with a very unusual mix of grape varieties. The wine however is quite something. Big and powerful with strong fruit and some spice. James Halliday awarded it 89 Points. I however wouldn’t go quite that far. It’s pleasant and good value for money for those who enjoy an Amarone style (like me) but there’s no real structure or depth to it. Open it, and enjoy drinking it over the next hour or so and you’ll love it. Leave it to react with the air for too long and it begins to lose it’s power. But Italy has nothing like it at this price point, so it’s pretty good value for money so long as you’re a quick drinker!
Mitchell Grenache Sangiovese Mouverdre 2003 is available from www.goodwineonline.co.uk at a very reasonable £7.58
