Hugh Hamilton ‘The Rascal’ Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2006
The Hamilton winery is one of the oldest in Australia, dating back to 1837, and Hugh is the 5th generation of his family to run the place. It’s a family affair with his wife, Pam and daughter, Mary, and they make some quite exceptional wines.
What’s it Like?
This wine is made with minimal intervention to reflect the ‘terroir’ of the vineyard as Shiraz flourishes in Mclaren Vale. It’s packed with dark fruit flavours, wonderfully smooth and velvety with good body. Although exceptionally strong at 16% abv the alcohol enhances the wine rather than overpowers it (although it overpowered me), and it’s suprisingly great with food.
