Tapiz Reserve Merlot 2005

tapiz_rva_merlotTapiz is an emerging Argentine winery to keep an eye on. It was formed in 1999 as part of Kendall Jackson but was subsequently sold to the Ortiz family who already owned quality vineyards in Mendoza. They’re now producing some outstanding wines from one of the most advanced wineries in Argentina.

What’s it like?

Deep ruby in colour with a big nose of blackberry and dark fruits. It’s full flavoured with strong blackberry and vanilla, smooth with a dry finish. Quite a big wine for a Merlot. It’s very enjoyable but not quite as good as the rest of the stable. It’s a little ‘manufactured’ to give these big intense flavours initially, which subsequently disappear the longer the bottle’s left open. It also has noticeable sulphites – nothing like a mass produced, branded wine of course - but here they’re clearly needed to hold the wine together. Overall it’s a very flavourful pleasant wine to be consumed quickly, but it’s not for the connoisseur – there are better wines out there for the money including the rest of the Tapiz range.

How much? Where can I buy it?

The Tapiz range  is likely to be popular and will become available in plenty of places, but right now you can buy it from Latin Wines Online for £11.99
