Marta’s Vineyard Signature Malbec 1999

martas-malbec-99Marta’s Vineyard is actually considerably more than the name implies. It’s a cooperative of families in the Mendoza region, led by Marta Lunardi. They own various vineyards between them but all share the same goal to produce exceptional wines. They take care of every process themselves from the vineyard right through to the finished product, and even marketing and distribution ensuring none of their wines are released for sale until they’ve acquired the necessary bottle age.

What’s it like?

Very good. It was no doubt excellent a couple of years ago, but is now starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Ruby in colour with strong fruit initially although this begins to dissipate. It’s VERY smooth and full in the mouth with a velvet mouthfeel. Very long too with vanilla on the finish. It’s a real shame I didn’t discover this wine a couple of years ago because I think it would have been something quite special. It’s still pretty good now, and the lack of fruit is only a problem if you’re drinking it without food. Pair it with some good hard cheese and it’s still very enjoyable.

How much? Where can I buy it?
