Hi Chris

Good news is that www.goodwineonline.co.uk now sell a unique range of wines which are legally classed as sulphite free. They have no added sulphur (or ANY other chemicals) whatsoever and are produced in such a way as to absolutely minimise naturally occurring sulphites too. In fact the free sulphur content of all the reds is below 5ppm and the total sulphur content is below 10ppm which is the EU and USA legal limit requiring a wine to state 'contains sulphites' on the label. They are as sulphite free as is possible to produce. They are also delicious and contrary to general (misinformed) opinion will keep in good condition for several years. They also produce a white which is below the limit for free sulphur but just over for total sulphur, which is as sulphite free as can be produced for a white. And similar for their Rose. These wines start from £10 - not as cheap as the Sainsbury wine - Stella Organics, am I right? But these wines are in a different league in quality. I also know www.goodwineonline.co.uk are about to stock the first wine from a brand new dedicated low sulphur brand - SoLo So2.

White wine simply can't be produced to be completely sulphite free but you will find you can safely drink whites with a very low free sulphur content.

Good luck

Thank you for the info in the article. As I have an intollerance to Sulpher Dioxide, I have to look for the Sulphite Free wines, but have only found one on sale in the UK. Sainsbury's sell a red, very reasonably priced Cab Sav. I will investigate the link you have above to see if I can buy white wine from a local winery.

By the way, Organic does not mean that no chemicals have been added. Sulpher Dioxide has. I am fed up of well meaning people trying to give me or sell me Organic wines. How can they be classed as Organic if they still have these chemicals added?!!

Great article. Do you think that if producers were forced to label additives they'd stop adding so many? I know the co-op have started to do this, but don't know what impact it's had on consumers.

On another point - if you're SW London based - Artisan & Vine is a great little wine bar specalising in local, organic and biodynamic wines.

Cheers,
Jamie
